Sometimes it's the simple things...

On my 2000 Aero SW bought 6 months ago, I noticed some time after buying that the little lights in the tailgate that illuminate the ground did not work. Truth be known I didn't even know they were there, nor those in the doors which at first I thought were a wank but now consider to be fantastic...
Anyhow, I read of problems related to the latch causing the lights not to work... then also of problems with the cable loom running to the hatch... many complicated and expensive problems discussed here... so I didn't care to even look at it.
For some reason the other day I took something out of the back and looked at those lights and thought to myself... err... maybe the bulbs are blown eh?? Ten seconds with a flat blade later and sure enough!
Given there were actually four lights there (two white facing downward and two red facing rearward) I figured ALL of them couldn't be blown right? Wrong, the red lights just use stray light from the white ones, and yes both of them were blown.
Sometimes you can worry yourself into more trouble than you're in! :-)
Cheers
Steve
PS I hope this is not footnoted by a complete electrical meltdown when I do install some new bulbs, me finding that by some bizarre Swedish wiring experiment they were the primary fusible link in the whole car...
