I did this last Fall on my 2000 4-cylinder. The thermostat housing is on the firewall side of the engine, near the brake master cylinder. The cover is held by three bolts (IIRC), one of which also is a connecting point for a ground cable.
The difficulty is access to the bolts. The brake master cylinder, fuel rail, and wiring harnesses work together to make access dificult and your view of the bolts is pretty much blocked completely. Removing the coolant hose connecting the thermostat to the radiator helps.
Remember to buy a new gasket for the new thermostat (my thermostat came with one in the box), and to install the thermostat with its vent hole at the high-noon position.
