Sportwagon package shelf

A recent post cited the value of the Sportwagon's solid yet foldable package shelf over the curtain type covers found on other wagons. Though the shelf certainly looks better than the others (though not any more practical since carrying loose packages on it isn't particularly safe),I've yet to find a way to store it when carrying a load that's higher and longer than the folded shelf. Leaving it in the garage isn't a solution since I do want the security the shelf provides after the load is removed. Since the rear seat is often occupied, placing it there doesn't work either. We're on our second Sportwagon and I've yet to find an answer. Perhaps someone out there has the solution.
