It is a general service bulletin out, TSB 440-2497 that mention several different problem scenarios with the 5 speed transmissions between 2002-2004.
One of the symptoms listed is hard engagement from P-D and N-D.
The cure is to install a modified valve body P/N 5449780 $1512.00 plus labor.
If the transmission is of an early make (pre 02GV 706486, the electrical wire harness needs to be replaced as well to fit the new style valve body P/N 5448873 $480.00.
Since your's a 2003 I can't say for sure if it has the new valve body or harness. You need to find the serial number on the transmission.
Just some weeks ago I had Volvo in with similar problems, they also use the same/similar AW 55 transmission and Volvo have a bulletin out to change the valve body and electric harness when solving some issues.
I only did a fluid flush and software update on that one to begin with (since fluid was very dirty) to see if it changed anything.
