and I have bought 2 cpo cars. I am not saying there is no cost to the consumer, but it is rolled into the cost of the car. I'd say the dealer is sticking it to you, and as long as you agree to the extra charges then its a binding part of the sales contract. For example, after you agree to a sales price the salesman present you with a contract with all the charges spelled out in detail. You know, the agreed price, the sales tax, and motor vehicle fees. Its here there dealer will insert bougus charges for things like dealer prep fees, document handling fees, what ever. As long as you agree to these fees they become part of the sales contract. My last cpo saab 9-5 had a dealer prep fee of something like $160 for cleaning and reconditioning of the vehicle. These services are supposed to be included in the cpo process. By the time I noticed the fee it was too late, the day of delivery. If I threatened to walk the dealer could have kept my $500 deposit. Also detailed in the sales contract. Read the contract, line by line before you sign. Thats the time to walk if you have to.
