You don't have to remove the cover. Just use silicon spray, make use of the tubing provided and spray into the key slot will do. I would not want to use WD40 as that leaves a layer of oil in the key cylinder which I am not sure if that will interfere with the electronics.
The least you could do, I guess, is to solder the pieces together and make sure it is properly insulated from other wires and metal surface, if any.
