These cars come in 3 engine types. If you're serious about this car I'd suggest you to test drive all of them and don't skip the freeway test! Each engine type has a very different personality. I opted to avoid the 99 year in my car search because it's the first year these cars were made, but I've noted many happy campers on this board who own a 99.
As for reliability, I don't think many of these are lemons, mine certainly isn't. Keep in mind people come here with their problems. Do study the board regarding the typical maintenance problems. You'll see recurring themes and not a random array of issues.
My sense is if you're willing to be proactive in maintaining the car and can afford the maintenance then you'll do fine assuming you pick a well maintained car in the first place. If you're wondering if you can afford the worst possible maintenance ask your self if you can afford a complete bumper to bumper aftermarket warranty. Whether or not you actually buy the warranty, if you can't afford it then be careful about buying this car.
I bought the 01 SE (V6) 15 months ago and an extended warranty 7 months ago so that I wouldn't have to sweat an unexpected maintenance catastrophy. I'm still waiting to use the extended warranty. Far and away the best vehicle I've ever owned.
