I have driven many cars (both manuals and autos) including the 9-5 Aero auto. Whereas I have driven slicker and "faster"/sportier manuals (BMW springs to mind - but there are other criteria than a nice gearbox when choosing a car...) I actually think that the Aero had the nicest auto I have ever tried. It even felt faster than the tiptronic in my colleague's Audi S8. But, of course, it must be said that I only ever drove the Aero in the Sport setting ;o)
So, why did I choose the manual? Well, I suppose it's a European thing; old people drive autos here ... and besides, I like to decide - or should I say drive - myself. Granted, there are times that I would have preferred an auto (e.g., bumper to bumper driving), but to me it's not real driving with an auto. And then there's the fuel consumption to think of. Although I live in Luxembourg, which has one of the lowest petrol prices in Europe, they don't give it away like they do in the US ...
If you're looking for a car with an auto I couldn't think of a better choice. When Swedish TV's "Trafikmagasinet" tested the 9-5 Aero they praised the (Japanese) auto box whereas they didn't like the (SAAB) manual transmission: "Now that SAAB has failed for 50 years in making a decent gearbox perhaps they should ask the Japanese to make them the manual as well." End Quote...
For those of you who can read Swedish, here it is:
