Mike, I respect you a lot both for your comments on this board in general and your helpful advice to me two years ago before my European Delivery experience. Nevertheless, I don't think you appreciate how annoying it is for GM/Saab customers to receive such completely disconnected messages from corporate promotions and the local dealer. My promotion specifically urged me to go to the Santa Monica dealer (out of several in my area), so I naturally assumed they would know about it. Off I went, but they claimed to have no knowledge of the event.
It's wrong to say it worked because it got me into the dealer. A "bait and switch" would also get me into the dealer, but is illegal. This felt like a "bait and switch" to me. I am not making a legal argument, but a point about how a customer feels. (As it happens, I had already had bad experiences at the Santa Monica dealership, so have been using the Van Nuys dealership both for the purchase and service. And when I buy my next Saab, I'll remember how unhelpful that Santa Monica dealer was, and how helpful the Van Nuys folks have been.)
I recognize that this appears to have something to do with the structure of the car industry. It's not unique to GM or Saab at all. I had similar experiences with VW (i.e., corporate HQ sending some promotion related to sales or service; local dealer knowing nothing about it).
