The wiring adapter that comes with the kit just has wires in it and a rubber grommet to take the place of the plug in the body. You run the wires through the hole and then solder them into a big mother trailer connector that attaches to the hitch. At least, that's how my 9000 hitch kit came.
You *could* cut the wires to the trailer adapter, push them through the little hole, and then splice the wires. You could even keep the splice on the inside of the car, and get a "blind" mating connector to keep the car connector clean when there isn't a trailer there.
Or you could just run the wires out the tailgate and let the rubber gasket squeeze around them. that's what I do.
