Well,it's the same block, crank, pistons, etc., but those never caused anyone grief. It's the belt drive that, on the original car, was a POS. As we know, that engine then went into the Cadillac Catera, and then into early CTX models. When they heard about the 30,000 belt change interval, and by the way it sometimes breaks anyway, they had a cow. Bingo, no more 30,000 mile belt change, and no significant reliability issues.
The other issue was the V-6's anemic performance, something the turbocharging helped quite a bit.
Finally there was the dollars and cents issue. That GME V-6 was always an expensive engine to build (In Europe, the early V-6 models were priced higher than the 2.3 HOT (Aero) models from what I've heard.) That and the still-muted performance pretty well spelled the end for the 3.0.
