Transmission Fluid Question

I was playing around with my automatic transmission this afternoon on my 2001 V6. I was dropping it into second and then first to use engine breaking down a hill. Don't worry this isn't a habit, I know brake pads are much cheaper than a transmission. However, I noticed that in 1st gear the car lets out a high pitched whine/sqeal until you come to a stop. I got home and used my WIS to do the fluid check procedure; put it in drive for 15 seconds, reverse for 15 seconds, and then park for 15 seconds. Then check the fluid while it's idling in park. I am not too familiar with transmission fluid, so I am not sure what it should look and smell like. Anyway, it's a light brown and smelled like wax a little. The engine was fully warmed up when I did this and the level was well out of the max line. And yes, I was looking at the hot side of the dip stick. It makes a whistle/whining sound in 1st when strarting from a stop but it's more of a whistle noise that I think is coming from my failing turbo. Any ideas why the fluid is above the max line?
