I don't think it's normal. If the trans is manual or auto in N or P, I think it seems rather smooth. The issue is with the tightly coupled auto trans torque converter which makes the engine labor at idle. Take your foot off the brake and it will cruise at ~10 mph on the flat.
Some have advocated a "fix" by having the idle speed adjusted upward. This has made little difference largely because the engine management already increases the idle speed when put under load. Watch the tach carefully in N or P and see it move upward as you put the selector in D. The fix, I guess, is to increase the stall speed of the torque converter, but that seems to be a bad trade-off.
The turbo has no effect.
