I checked my records over the 49,000 miles I have put on my 2002 9-5 wagon (5 speed) since I purchased it new. At each fill up I compute the MPG by hand using the trip odometer reading and the gallons (and then zero the trip odometer and clear the SID) and record the SID MPG. Hence, I have records on both mileage estimates at each fill. Regressing the computer SID MPG on a constant term and my computed MPG, here is what I find: SIDMPG = 2.98 + 0.93MPG. Both parameter estimates are statistically significant. Hence, the computer SID MPG is consistently high, but the extent of its upward bias falls as MPG rises. For example, at MPG=15, the SID MPG is about 13% too high (16.93), but at MPG=30 it is only about 3% too high (30.88), compared to the odometer.
