I have replaced both xenons and I did it at about 56,000 miles. Have the fuse taken out! I have and it hasn't affected me any differently than when they were on all day for no reason. They are really expensive. If you buy them from the dealer they will screw you. They aren't bad if you get them from ebay. I believe they are d1s bulbs with the square back. You can install it yourelf in two seconds without any problem.
Anyway, take out the fuse and save yourself some valuable hours of illumination.
