I bought an offlease car.

I believe owners get free maintenance as encouragement, but are not required to bring the car in.

Most dealers will bring up the service history if you ask nicely.

If a dealer is selling the car, one indication of whether it was maintained according to schedule will be if it's a CPO car. If it's in the CPO program then the previous owner probably did everything they should have as far as maintenance goes. If it's not in the program that may be an indication that they missed a service interval or something like that.
