1/2 gallon a day is a large amount of coolant to loose but it's about what I was loosing when my heater valve was leaking. The coolant was running down one of the heater hoses & dripping onto the engine & evaporating very quickly but left a small puddle. Feel around the valve and see if it's wet, this is a very common problem.
