IT never was down, you must likely got a lemon, or close to it. My family has owned many saabs since about 1984 (?) and have had no major problems with any. The only problems ever to my knowledge were...

1. On a '97 900 s convertible, there was a bad top switch that would make the interior light stay on, but it was fixed (we just turned the light switch off while driving for a week).

2. 2k Aero, auto-dimming mirror turned yellow and never dimmed, fixed a week later.

3. 2k Aero, Squeak in front of car, had both struts replaced (i was bad, other was questionable, so they replaced both including all other suspension components 2 weeks after we complained about the car, since some parts had to be ordered and were not in stock in aero specs.

4. A vibration in the sid panel when starting the car (the chime made it vibrate, but i fixed it myself my pushing it in tighter.

These things were minor annoyances, but our car has gone over a year trouble free and shows no signs of trouble.

Hopefully Vince won't be turned away from the 9-5 based on your story, which chances are is just bad luck, or maybe driving habit related.
