Here's how I view it for when i use them:
The cig lighter is fused for 30 amps I think. that means at a nominal 13v you max out around 390 watts. So if your inverter runs at or under 200 watts, you should be in the safe zone for typical use. The only consideration I would watch for is how long you might run it with the ignition off. It doesn't take much time at 200 watts or so to drop the battery charge below the safe engine starting range.
The other consideration is surges and trnasients which can mostly be avoided by plugging the inverter in and then running through a normal power on sequence. This should be finne with the car running or not. The caveat here is to not hot plug the device into anything with the inverterpower on. Furthermore, the cars fuses should offer some protection anyway.
