4 cyl voltage regulator replacement procedure??

I have a 2000 9-5 4cyl lpt which needs a new voltage regulator. After reading Swedecar's post stating that "alternator needs to be removed" to perform this relatively simple procedure, am I to interpret this as meaning removed from mounting AND extracted??? I understand that extricating an alternator from the engine bay of a 9-5 is a complicated task requiring exhaust pipe removal and considerable disassembly and wedging to remove from car. I guess I was hoping I could loosen/remove from mounts and manipulate alternator into a position in which I could remove the three screws on the back cover and replace regulator.
Any insight from anyone familiar with VR replacement would be greatly appreciated.
