with 5000 mile oil changes documented on invoices you will have 8 yrs on the engine sludge or not. W/out the changes you may have sludge, no warranty. With changes at 5000 approx, you almost certainly won't have sludge. If they won't give you the records (the dlr has them on line, whoever did the work as long as it was a dealer)back off. Or insist on having a tech check the car including pulling the valve cover. That tapping is one symptom of engine problems.
The manual calls for 10000 mi changes but says more often when indicated by conditions, which people seem to say means "car driven on planet Earth".
And buy a Carfax report not the one the dealer gives you, which is expurgated. That sometimes flags trouble, but is no guarantee.
Also, when you change the oil on that car (i have it) the new oil starts out black, bcs of part of the oil staying in - that's normal. Really clean oil means repeated changes have been done in a short time. raises a question
