Personal opinion only: I don't hear many complaints on this board regarding the 4spd. I have an '00 Aero w/ 4spd auto, now at 75K miles, and no problems with the trany whatsoever. Yes, the torque on the engine is reduced in that you don't get the 20 or 30 ftlb torque extra for the 20 sec overboost feature that you get with the sticks of that year. So I'd say its a bit slower zero to sixty. So if thats something you're really concerned with and go racing around all the time, get a stick. However, I have always been happy with the power and acceleration of this version, and think the 4spd actually makes really good use of the torque curve, and probably many stick drivers don't shift like the pros who report on 0-60 times anyway, as I've been able to keep up with any other saab when needed.
I can't speak to mileage, but I would guess a stick can always get better mileage than an auto, be it 4spd or 5spd.
Good luck with your choices!
