you've seen that all new synthetic oil is fairly transparrent, over time the oil suspends contaminants which will make the oil dark, over enough time sludge. more to it then that but you get the jist...
no oil would be dark or saturated after a few days, even if you had a dirty engine new synthetic will help clean it up over time but the oil doesn't work that fast nor can it get brown that fast. I can change my oil and check it once a month and it will take a couple of months before it starts showing obvious signs of contamination. so if he removed the filter and drain plug he had to remove the oil, unless (a long shot) the rear end of the car was somewhat higher then the front end which might have left a quart of old oil up front in the oil pan. then he adds new oil which might explain the extra quart and the dirty apperance of new oil?
