I battled with this very same problem for a long time... after replacing some of the EVAP system valves and hoses it turned out to be crack in the tank at the vac/pressure sensor (replaced tank once). Nothing like the smell of fresh fuel in the car after gassing up to kill some brain sells.
I found a fix that is now going on two years and cheap. Bought some fuel tank sealent designed for seams/rivets on homebuilt airplanes. Basically a fuel friendly aircraft-rated epoxy. I removed the pedastal the valve sits on (source of leaks)and expoxied the sensor to the tank in a perminant (leakproof) fashion.
No more smell, leaking, or check engine lights. Not counting all the other things I tried this solution cost $10 and one hour of work. Got the epoxy from aircraft spruce - if you want the brand name or more just let me know.
Good Luck,
Scott
