Think more along the lines of a Master Caution light or panel. In Night Panel, it uses the gauge cluster as a MCP leaving only the essential info there - speed.
So in a Saab, as in most tactical gray jets, anything out of the ordinary will trigger a MCP light and bring your attention there.
In the car, it would be the gauge in question so, it kinda works like a MCP.
Few things are as exciting as a Fuel Low light on the MC Panel coming on at night in a jet, that'll get your attention, although if you got there inadvertently you should and probably will soon take up walking or swimming as a means of transport. Not so much when the fuel gauge in the car illuminates because you're at 25% or lower.
In a jet your scan would be severely hampered by darkened essential gauges, I just wouldn't trust a system like that while flying.
