It's a sign that the car wants to go to another home.
I made that decision yesterday. I've always had more repairs on my 2000 9-5 than on my wife's 1991 900. They've never been minor either. Last year I had to wrangle a goodwill replacement when the ABS computer went mental. That would have been something like $3,000 without it.
Things have started to get worse, though. My 2000 9-5 stranded me by the side of the road in May when the clutch master cylinder went. My wife can't drive it safely because the computer in the driver's seat is fried and will randomly start moving backwards, leaving her feet off the pedals. I've been meaning to replace that, but since I hear that the part is $950 new, I've been putting it off until I found a used part. Yesterday, on our way to a friend's wedding rehearsal the left front wheel came off. The bolt had apparently sheered off (neither of us recalls driving over anything of consequence lately, but I guess that the aero is so low slung that anything is possible). My mechanic said if this had happened at highway speeds, they'd be driving to a funeral. There was some body damage since the wheel bent the wheel well pretty badly when it came off.
And of course the thing consumes about a pint of oil between fillings, a sign of ominous things to come. Sad thing is, we've always maintained the car impeccably. We're keeping the 900, which we bought earlier and for a whole lot less than the 9-5 and selling the wonder of modern technology.
No more Saabs for me. This is our fourth, and I just don't see the sense in wasting money anymore.
