As others note, this could be a sketchy choice. 9-5s are great (we have an '03 wagon), but that vintage had some issues, and any car approaching 100K miles can be due for a ca$$h infusion. Do some research on the car.
CARFAX to see how many owners, accident reports, etc.
Get the VIN and go to a Saab store and have them run it to see what may have been done to the car.
Does the owner have records so you can see the history. For example, has its engine had sludge issues that gave it a new engine, turbo, etc? or has it been well maintained all its life?
Do the records say it has spent a lot of time in the shop? Some cars (of any make) live at dealers more than others. Other owners are religious about maintenance. You want to know.
You especially want to know what has been done recently, as the owner may know it is due for some big ticket items, or smaller things that will add up.
Have it checked out by a Saab tech--indies are best for this, not dealers. You need to know what's going on with it to avoid surprises and give you negotiating leverage.
Alternatively, consider a 9000 or a NG 900 or 9-3. The 9000s can be picked up very reasonably and are excellent cars, especially for a student who has to put their life in the back to move to and from school. They have issues, but most of it is not hugely expensive or hard to do if you DIY. My daughter about to enter college has a 9000, so do I.
The NG 900 and 9-3 are also hatchbacks. Smaller than a 9K but excellent cars for your needs. Any of them can be had for less than the 9-5.
As you investigate come back here for questions and input. Good luck!
