When left in Auto and cold started the system pulls in outside air, exhausting the hot air trapped inside the car. After about a minute, it switches to recirculate. It ramps up the speed gradually until it reaches full. There are a few settings it can be customized to do. They are Auto on, Auto Off, Recall last setting, and predetermined setting. Performance is equal to my '95 9k and 99 9-3 SE. It is certainly adequate for the 103-105 days we have where I live. I have often wondered if ramping up the fan speed on start up didn't provide the time for the evaporator to cool down fully before maximum flow. Personally I hate getting hit with hot air until the system gets cold.
