Trickier than that if factory rear shocks.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Wed, 26 Jul 2006 18:40:40 In Reply to: Re: Rear struts, Dean, Wed, 26 Jul 2006 14:39:49 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The factory rear shocks are gas charged. If your car still has the factory shocks, or if they were replaced with OEM units (either Saab or Sachs brand) then you will require two jacks!
You will need to position a jack under the lower shock eye to compress the shock, after placing the new shock in the shock cage and bolting the cage back into the car, so you can re-insert the lower shock bolt. This bolt has a fine thread and is very easy to cross-thread if the shock eye is not perfectly aligned with the rear swing arm(?) mounting point. (Don't ask how I know this)
You will also need an impact wrench to undo the top nut as the rear shock uses a bayonet mount to attach to the cage. If you have a full set of new hardware (new nuts and multiple rubber bushings) you can torch off the old pieces. If your shocks did not come with all new mounting hardware you will need to save all these pieces for re-use.
I started to D-I-Y this job 2 or 3 years ago, realized I was in over my head due to lack of; impact wrench, plasma wrench (torch), and new hardware. I carefully put everything back together and took the car to my local Indie. One of the few jobs I couldn't complete myself.
Now I need to do it again and am hoping that Nick T receives some Factory Roadholding Kits soon.
