Transmission Leak

Took my 2001 ’95 LPT to my new Indie who did a complete checkout of the car and noticed the start of a leak from the transmission split. Looking from the underside of the car the exposed part of the transmission is split into 2 halves that run front to back. It was evident that a sealer was used in this split and I was completely unaware of it. He indicated that it might have been done to fix an existing leak while under warranty. He also pointed out that they probably would have had to pull the tranny to do it which would have meant an overnight job. I went through my service bills and aside from regular transmission flushings had nothing more knowingly done to the tranny than that. The only time I had it in overnight was when the dealer replaced the turbo to fix the notorious blue smoke issue.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Could the sealer have been applied to the transmission at the factory?
