On all new customers cars that comes into my shop for an oil change, I use a coat hanger bent to shape and check for oil sludge through the drain hole.
See picture.

This at least (even though coarse) is one way to see if it has some sludge issues.

I also do all oil changes with hot engine. That way, the oil is gushing out quicker through the drain hole and maybe if I'm lucky, drag some particles with it on the way out and also maybe release some particles from the oil pick up scren when the oil is poured out from the oil pump.

When the engine and oil is cold, it will leave more oil inside the engine and maybe more of the dirt, if any.
