Edmunds uses TMV - True Market value, which often results in a lower, more realistic number, but varies by area. It seems to reflect more closely the changes in vehicle popularity that vehicles undergo in the market, ie. what people are really getting for their cars lately. For example, with gas prices running fairly high recently, Edmunds would more quickly reflect the falling demand for big SUV's and trucks, whereas KBB would reflect the longer term factors such as overall brand and model popularity, reliability, etc.
I used to buy/sell vehicles fairly frequently (here on the west coast) and found Edmunds TMV pricing to be fairly close to real world value, whereas KBB was nowhere close (usually high). Just my experience.
