Depends on your situation & what will really make you happy. A few yrs ago, I test drove a '98 540i sport 6spd and the '00 Aero. Needed the extra room in back for kids, car seats, etc., price was better on the aero, more warantee left (bought it used in '02). I was certainly impressed with the power & handling of the bmw, but did not like the dated interior look, etc., and nothing really grabbed me about it. Something about the aero just hooked me, maybe it was its uniqueness, the front grill look, the pull of the turbo from a 4cyl, the interior instrument and control panel looks, the smell, who knows? So in the end, if you can afford to trade cars (nothing is free), and you like the 540, then try it, but remember you are then into a car 5yrs older, so know the service history well. There's always another car around the corner if you change your mind in the future.
