My experience with studded tires

It hurts dry performance and they are noisy but if you get any ice, nothing else can match it. I have used the studless kind twice before but I am glad I went with the studded tires. A 4WD Jeep Cherokee was stuck at stop sign on an icy road. Every time it tried to go the whole car would twist towards the embankment. When I got the chance, I just zipped by him.
That being said, unless it is icy or snowy/icey often, then it doesn't make sense to have the studded tires. It's too much of a compromise in the dry for the excellent ice traction. The studless ones are still much better than an all season.
