Trading "sideways" or "up a little" -- What's fair?

I've got an '04 9-5 Arc sedan -- 18,000 miles, Espresso Black, HK audio, ventilated seats, electrochromatic rear view mirror w/ HomeLink, and Xenons. For various reasons, I've been thinking about trading it in on an equivalent 9-5 Aero wagon.
I've bought and sold a lot of cars (49 at last count)... dealing mostly with new car dealers. Up 'til now the transactions have been either cash for a new car (no trade), cash for a new car (older trade)... and a few times I've sold off late model company cars to new car dealers selling the same brand without buying anything.
I've never traded "sideways" or "up a little" ... does that typically work any differently?
If I traded my car in on an "equivalent" Aero wagon with the same mileage and condition, am I basically looking at getting "trade-in" value for my car and paying "retail" for the wagon? Crunching numbers from Edmunds and KBB, it seems that the difference would be around $8,000 ... $3,000 - $4,000 due to the Aero wagon being more expensive to begin with (and maybe more desireable as a used car).
Or, would a "fair for all concerned" deal be a dealer giving me the Galves value for my car... and my buying the wagon for its Galves value plus x% or y$$ -- say $2,000 -- plus and additional z$$ if the car is Certified.
Thoughts?
