Automotive A/C systes that use an orifice tube for metering do use a suction line accumulator. My 2001 silverado has this type of system (known as CCOT - cycling clutch orifice tube). The compressor cycles off when the pressure in the accumulator drops too low and risks freezing the evaporator.

The Saab 9000 had a cycling clutch expansion valve system. This type of system uses a liquid line filter/drier. The compressor cycles based on a temperature probe stuck into the evaporator.

The Saab 9-5 uses a variable capacity compressor/expansion valve system. This type of system also uses a liquid line filter/drier. The compressor rarely (if ever) cycles during normal operation. Using a pressure sensor on the low side piping, the compressor will ramp up or down to maintain a set low side pressure of about 30psi.
Here's a topside view of the filter/dryer on a 2000 9-5 I-4. It is located behind the driver's side headlight.

Also, almost every manufacturer of residental central ac systems put a liquid line filter/drier in the outside condensing unit as standard equipment.
