I just had my car into a local Dealer for service. A noise from the front end that I had suspected was worn wheel bearing(s) was diagnosed by the Tech as a bad bearing on the right front wheel. I didn't attempt this repair myself because I don't have access to a 25 Ton hydraulic press to remove onw of the two bearings from the hub.
The Dealership replaced the hub, bearing, and snap clip. Is replacing the hub common? I know a bearing can fail to the point where the hub is ruined but my car was driveable, just a growling noise that sometimes changed to a whoop-whoop sound if you listened carefully.
Possible reasons:
1) The Mr Goodwrench part only is available as hub with bearing pressed in.
2) The Dealership lacks the precision machinery to accurately locate the bearing within the hub if they pressed it in themselves.
3) The labor cost to remove the old and press in a new is greater tha the hub cost.
4) The Dealership's lawyers/insurance company forbid such repair because of possible future problems and liability.
5) Profit maximization for the Dealerhsip - a $280 hub generates more profit than a $70 bearing and labor to perform pressin/press out function. Plus the loss of service bay availability.
6) The hub was bad.
This hub always gave me trouble so I am not too sad to see it gone. This is the only hub that would cause an aluminum wheel to stick to it, and the one which gave the most problems when removing brake rotors. Apparently the outer diameter was either right at the maximum allowable limit, or slightly beyond.
Anyone else have the hub replaced with the bearing when the car was driveable and with a bearing noise some might ignore?
Thanks.
