I was caught in this same predicament just 2 days ago. I was really leaning toward the Volvo, I love the 3rd seat option & I think the front seats are as comfortable as Lay-Z-Boy recliners. But after all was said & done I went with a SAAB. It was a combination of financing issues & questions about reliability that lead me to that choice.

The Volvos have certain things that NEED to be maintainted otherwise there are major issues. Unless you can be sure that all of those parts have been replaced, you're looking at some serious repair costs.

4 major things to look at with the 99-01's.

1) ETM. From 99-01 there were major issues with the Electronic Throttle Module on the Volvos. You can read all about it here: http://v70xc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4875. This was one of the issues that lead me to look at getting one of the 98 V70s instead of a later model.

2) PCV / RMS. The Positive Crankcase Ventilation on these models of Volvo tends to get plugged up. If not maintained on a regular basis, a clogged PCV will back up pressure into the system & begin blowing oil out the Rear Main Seal. Once this begins, you can delay major repairs by cleaning the PCV, but in the end, a new RMS will probably be needed. The cleaning of the PCV and an RMS can be a DIY, but usually is left to more skilled mechanics.

3) AC Evaporator. There were major issues with the AC evap systems in these cars & they would begin leaking & die. This leads to a $1500 repair. I almost bought a car that had this problem on the horizon until a great indy said that there was a sticker under the hood that indicated they had dyed the AC coolant to look for leaks & that was a sign the Evap was probably toast.

4) Struts. Nothing major, these just tend to break pretty quickly on the volvos & need replacement a little more often than your normal car.

There are a few other issues, but they aren't as prominent. Note, if you're looking at an AWD model, there are some serious driveline issues with them & they tend to have axle issues as well. Make sure you research that before you purchase.

So you can see, knowing the service history of a Volvo is CRITICAL to making sure you will have a happy ownership of the vehicle. I wouldn't own one unless I knew exactly who owned it & a record of everything done.

The SAABs also have issues. 4 cyls have the DIC & Sludging issues, so I went V6. Sure there are the timing belt issues & the SID problems, but in the end I can change the timing belt before bad things happen & my car will still run without a SID.

Don't get me wrong. I still love the Volvos, I just wasn't able to find one that had the service history I felt comfortable enough with.
