I'll tell you my Jim Ellis Story.
2001 9-5 Aero. CEL at 51k. Code is Random Misfire. Jim Ellis resets code and says that it's because the PO had put in a RRFPR. I tell them I think it's the IDM.
Less then a week later I throw a code again. Back to Jim Ellis - same code. I tell them they should replace the IDM since it's a known bad part. They say they would have been more likely to replace if I had purchased the car from them instead of an independent dealer. I file a complaint with SAAB USA. The district rep agrees with Jim Ellis.
I ordered a new IDM from Eeuroparts.com. I haven't had a CEL since (20k miles and 2 years).
After the recall I had to go back to my local dealer (now in Vermont) to get them to write up a ticket saying that my IDM was installed correctly (of course it was, the car has ran perfectly for 2 years). Then, and only then, would SAAB refund my money for the IDM.
The point of this long story is that I didn't give up - and Jim Ellis could have solved the problem the first (or second) time, but they didn't.
I'm quite sure that a failed IDM would cause your cat to have problems. SAAB should pay for any parts that go bad when the recalled part fails. If you had been in an accident because of the bad IDM I'm sure someone from corporate would have called you already. SAAB is lucky - and needs to step up to the plate. Saab Customer Service (corporate) doesn't know the first thing about cars, or what the problems really are (my manager rep at CS said I was the first person who had ever changed the IDM on their own - it's a "difficult" part to change). BUT, Jim Ellis sees these problems each day. Dealers need to get on board and start helping the customer.
FWIW, I get better service when I bring in Mini Coopers, Chevy trucks, and even my 1985 Suburban. Wake up Saab! Customer Service sells more cars!
Don't give up. Take it to the top. Get what you deserve. Tell them you'll get signatures of others who have had a cat fail just after an IDM failure. Power in numbers.
Liam :-)
