Reinstalling rubber gasket around AT selector

Last weekend I replaced the "Darkwood" dash fascia on my '04 9-5 with an OE red walnut dash kit from genuinesaab.com (like the '98-'01 non-aero 9-5s).
All by itself, the dash looks MUCH nicer... and an added bonus is that changing to that color allowed me to get matching "reproduction" wood door pulls from stateofnine.com. And while those door pulls are not really reproductions of the all-wood accessory door pulls that Saab offered for a few years -- they are manufactured by Benevento and "stick on" like their aftermarket dash kits -- they do a really good job of dressing up the interior.
The only difficulty I'm having is reinstalling the rubber gasket around the AT selector. When I removed it, it just peeled off like it was a press-fit, but there isn't anything to press back in. And while I can put it in place by stretching it around the body of the selector, it pops right back off. Unless I am missing something, my plan is to use a few strategically placed "dots" of silicone adhesive to hold it in place. (I don't want to make things too permanent in case I need to get in there to service something... like the selector light bulb).
Am I missing something?
Thanks in advance for any feedback/suggestions.
