HELP: Stuck at refitting steering column splined part

Hello all,
In an attempt to fix the annoying steering column 'click', I undid the 13mm bolt where the base of the steering column joins the firewall and took apart the splined part to lube it. At first I applied liberal amounts copper paste lubricant (anti-seize) on both the parts and tried to refit it. I found that I could not go more than 1/2".
I separated the parts to remove excessive anti-seize and tried again... Now the splined column goes in until the last 1/2" and refuses to budge. I tried to remove it again but it still does not move. Tried many times but nothing I do seems to make it move in or out. I have tried dismantling fluid, heating the outer splined column (though I couldn't bring it to even 212F), etc. Even tried dinner for strength *sigh*.
Can anyone teach me a trick or two on how to remove that $&*^* stuck splined column? I don't have much elbow room down there and the car is flat on the ground (I don't have a lift) so I can only exert so much force from a contorted body position.
Many thanks in advance!!
Jay
