Dexcool postings go way back on the internet and we don’t know for sure.
By the way, the major Dexcool issues on the internet stems from a different type of cooling system in GM cars that used a sort of open to air cooling system compared to Saabs that are sealed.
GM says that a change to those systems (pressure cap)were made to correct the problem. I don't know.
A mechanic friend of mine says he see the same problems (brown sludge) now on later GM cars as before so he don't like Dexcool at all.
One class I went to talked about that Dexcool is ok as long as you change it every 2 years just like the other coolants.
That kind of defeats the purpose of the “long life” coolant.
Keep in mind that car manufacturers doesn’t always keep the best of the car in mind when doing things but what gives the best payoff to the stock holders and following the demands from EPA and such organizations.
Car makers receive “green fee reductions” when they can show how little emissions the car let out. Everything in the car is compiled into different levels of waste products. So if they can prove “reasonably” that a car can go 5 years/150K miles with one fill of coolant, they get kickbacks in terms of lesser fees.
If it would come out that the coolant IS NOT holding up to their promises, they might loose millions in that they have to pay those fees.
So you will never hear from the car maker that the coolant is good but needs to be replaced every 2 years instead of 5.
The same goes with the extended oil change intervals. It might not be good for the car, but who cares if it is "reasonably" ok. They can always fight it later on just like the ignition cassette one or the extended engine warranty.
The fill before 2002 in Saabs were Valvoline/Zerex G48 but after what I understand, they don't make it anymore which is strange since I can still get it from the dealer.
It is also posting here on the board where they have sent letters to Valvoline asking about it and the answer is that G48 is not produced anymore but the G05 is a direct fit with no need to flush the system and that't what they are making nowadays.
I would not change out the Dexcool for another product when the car is still under warranty.
You don't stand a chance against Saab if something happens to the engine or cooling system and they can see that you have used another product.
At least it would be a big uphill battle for you to get warranty coverage.
I change the Dexcool just like the other coolants when I do the 30, 60, 90K miles major services but I use Dexcool again if the car had it when it came in.
I must say though that the cooling systems stay clean with no corrosion, but that they have done ever since Saab started to use the G48 blue coolant.
