You can safely drive without SID in, but the car will..

do some slightly weird things.

1) No click sound when turn signals flash.
2) Odometer illumination is set to high all the time. Slightly distracting when driving at night.
3) ACC panel illumination is set to low at all times. Hard to read ACC display during the day.
4) The dashboard brightness adjuster does not work.
5) The steering wheel audio controls do not work.
6) The AUTO mode for the ACC controls works fine when you first start the car, but as soon as cabin temp reaches the desired set point the control starts doing strange things (like admitting cold outside air thru the dash vents when trying to heat!). The solution for me was to change to Manual controls after the car warmed itself, then the heating system worked fine.
7) I received a undocumented Code 22 error message on the ACC system when resetting it without the SID in place. This error message went away as soon as I reinstalled the repaired unit.

They may be a few others that I did not discover during my four days without a SID.
