From what I hear the V6 has a little more low-range power than the Aero because the Aero has a larger turbo and smaller engine, so while there is minimal turbo lag I think there's still more lag than the V6. You are right though, first gear isn't all that great but it helps to get the car to its "sweet spot" faster from a stop. (Compared to my dad's Caravan first gear in my Saab is warp speed). Next time I am at a red light next to a Hyundai I'll put the shift-lever in first rather than drive and smoke them, with any luck.
