As a NY driver with an '02 Aero wagon (automatic), I find that I average between 28.5 and 30 mpg for my frequent 215 mile drive from north of the Catskills to Manhattan. Except in the coldest winter weather, the mileage depends mostly on traffic between the west end of the George Washington Bridge and the garage. Moderate conditions (weather and traffic) reliably yield 29 mpg at 60 mph door-to-door (comprised of 70-80 mph thruway combined with about sixty miles of upstate-over-the-river-through-the-woods). I do the scheduled maintenance timely, use premium gas, run the Michelin Pilots at a very comfortable 36-34 (front/rear) and have changed the oil every 5-7,000 miles since I bought the car new...no rocket science, no secret formula.
The next time I turn the ignition key, this may, for some unknown reason, be completely and forever different; but it still will have been 75,000 miles of effortless and economical driving pleasure.
