Brakes question

My wagon will be needing brakes soon. The last time I had them done at the dealer the price was almost $500 for the fronts. A local indy shop can do it for under $300 using Saab parts. My question is (pardon my ignorance): is any special tools or equipment needed for a brake job on a 9-5? I'll use the dealer for 30k services but i'd like to save money as long as i am not making compromises on the car.
