No, my 9-3SS did not have any major issues beyond a little bit of the peeling buttons issue that you read about and the fact that any amount of bass would rattle the door speakers. I bought it used, and it hadn't had any major issues with the previous owner either. I liked it alot, but I was able to get an amazing deal on the 9-5 b/c I am eligible for the GM employee discount through my father which could be combined with the great cash back offers. I like the extra room in the 9-5, plus, I always felt that the 9-5 has a little more Saab "character", but that's completely subjective.
The 9-3 Aero is a great little rocket car, though, so I would say that the best thing to do is drive both and get comfortable with both interiors and see which one fits you better.
