Low water temp gauge

For the last 6½ years the water temp gauge in my 9-5 Aero has always been bang in the middle ("nine o'clock") as soon as the engine has warmed up.
At X-mas, however, I went on a long trip - mostly driving at a fairly constant 160 km/h (100 mph) - and the the gauge never went above "eight o'clock". Is this a sign that something is wrong - and if so, what?
Curiously, today on my way to work the temp gauge moved back up to "nine o'clock", although one would think that a 1000 km trip at 160 km/h would heat the water up a bit more than a 4 km trip across town...
Regards,
Caspar
