Thanks.
1. Radiators don't rust out these days. according to the indie. They're made of aluminum and plastic and maybe some steel, and one side of it simply blew open under pressure. They're not as repairable, like with a welder's torch, as they were back in the day, according to him.
2. He asked me to see if the most recent blown hose showed signs of a violent tear. It did. He said that is more symptomatic of a fine hose that went kaput under more than the normal 15 psi the cooling system is under. He thinks it's a head gasket problem now. 15 psi shouldn't blow open radiators, hoses, or anything else.
3. I trust the indie... it's Sovereign Automotive in Roswell, Ga.
4. The VW Passat is consistently among Consumer Report's highest rated family sedans. Don't want one, I really want the wagon to work.
I'm just asking for knowledgeable folks to weigh in on what could be happening to the car, not comment on the experience of my mechanic or my choice of replacement vehicles. Neither are helpful.
Anders, you there? ;-)
Thanks.
Eric
