A failing IDM can damage or destroy the catalytic converter due to the massive amount of unburned fuel that can enter the exhaust system. Other than that (as in, other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play) there's little damage potential.
The "inspection" involves checking the module's serial number and replacing it if it is not of the latest design. At the same time, many people recommend having the engine computer updated to the latest software. That software has better spark control logic which by itself has been shown to double the IDM life expectancy. The updated software also includes a diagnostic routine that will in some cases set a code before the IDM failure stops the car cold.
With both the updated hardware and software, the IDM failure rate is estimated at 50 per 1000 vehicles over a ten year span. That compares to an estimated failure rate for the very wors year (2001, sorry) of 800 per 1000 vehicles over a ten year span. There is no data available estimating the failure rate for vehicles with updated hardware but with the original software.
